Young Mukilteo composer will have works debut Monday

Published 3:25 pm Thursday, April 17, 2008

As the culmination to the 2007-2008 David Diamond Young Composers Workshop, Seattle Symphony musicians will premiere chamber works written by 10 pre-college-age composers — including James Myles of Mukilteo — in a free performance at 8 p.m. Monday at Benaroya Hall.

Myles is a returning member of the young composers workshop. A senior at Kamiak High School, he is an active member of the fine arts program. Primarily a baritone sax player, he also is proficient on bassoon, euphonium, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax and tuba.

The audience Monday will hear his Concertino for Bass Clarinet and String Quintet.

The young composers will briefly discuss the inspiration behind their pieces before their performance.

This year’s concert also features the works of young composers Benjamin Davis and Jason Wong of Bellevue; Matt Reed of Buckley; Kailee Wright of Kent; Daniel Miller of Redmond; and Peter Freeman, Achil Jackson, Miran McPoland and Robert Yaman of Seattle.

Monday’s performance is the culmination of a 12-week workshop led by Seattle Symphony composer-in-residence Samuel Jones, whose Tuba and Horn concertos were premiered recently by Seattle Symphony.

The David Diamond Young Composers Workshop gives students the opportunity to work on all aspects of composing, including writing themes, learning orchestration and preparing a final score with parts.

Free general admission seating will begin 30 minutes prior to Monday’s performance. Seattle Symphony music director Gerard Schwarz will host the event in the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya, 200 University St., Seattle.
