EVERETT — A police pursuit ended in death Friday night when an 18-year-old Granite Falls man crashed his vehicle into a tree after he tried to outrun police, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said.

The man was pronounced dead at Providence Everett Medical Center Colby campus.

The pursuit began about 8:10 p.m. Friday when a Snohomish County sheriff’s deputy saw a vehicle speeding on Westwick Road, east of U.S. 2. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver did not pull over, Goetz said.

The deputy chased the vehicle to the 7700 block of 171st Ave. SE, when the vehicle veered off the road and struck a tree, Goetz said.

Firefighters took the man to the Everett hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The deputy who was involved in the pursuit was placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure, Goetz said. The deputy has worked for the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office for more than 25 years.

The pursuit and accident are under investigation by the Snohomish County Multi-Agency Response Team, which handles investigations involving law enforcement.
