Red Cross sends locals to Nevada

Red Cross disaster relief volunteers from the Snohomish County chapter departed for Reno, Nev., on Tuesday to help after flooding caused 3,500 people to leave their homes in Lyon County.

Hunter MacKay of Bothell, a Red Cross client casework supervisor; Steven Place of Everett, transportation specialist; and Steve Taylor of Gold Bar, transportation supervisor, are joining other Red Cross disaster relief response resources that include a corps of volunteers, emergency response vehicles and a mobile emergency communication center.

Their assignments are for three weeks or until they’re no longer needed.

Kids receive gifts from food bank

Elf House, at the Concern for Neighbors Food Bank in Mountlake Terrace, had gifts for 430 kids at Christmastime.

Volunteer Pam Martinez said they expected to serve 260 children, but had enough gifts from neighbors and businesses to fill many more needs.

“I wish you could have been there when the parents realized their children wouldn’t be forgotten this year,” Martinez said. “I had an incredible staff, half from the food bank. Women who had received much and wanted to give back. It was a thrill watching their self-esteems grow and grow as they began to realize their self-worth.”

Tulalip TV channel adds music videos

Tulalip KANU-TV, Channel 99, now offers an American Indian music program called “Red Rocks.”

The program will feature such bands as Redbone, a rock band that performs songs including “We Were All Wounded at Wounded Knee.” The program, developed in California for American Indian television channels, will join other programs, including the tribes’ weekly general manager’s report, “Rez-Robics,” Northwest Indian News and Tulalip Heritage school basketball.

Corrections

n Frank Shorter won the Olympic Gold Medal for the marathon in 1972. A story about a marathon running boom, “Going the Whole 26.2 Miles,” published in Saturday’s Outdoor section on Page F1 listed the incorrect year.

n Kyoko Matsumoto Wright of Mountlake Terrace was recently appointed to fill an open position on the Mountlake Terrace City Council. A story on Page B3 Tuesday incorrectly identified her.
