Members of the Immaculate Conception-Our Lady of Perpetual Help School’s inaugural robotics team performed well in competitions this year.
The Brainbots, as the students call themselves, won the robot performance wildcard award at a regional meet in Edmonds in December.
The following week, at the state championship competition in Bellevue, the Brainbots outscored their previous best by a large margin and finished in the top eight statewide out of 125 teams.
The team included 14 sixth- and seventh-graders who built and programmed robots and edited video.
The Immaculate Conception team also won the documentary film award for their three-minute movie about their robotic experience.
Team members included Gabi Caferro, David Comeaux, Andrea Eitner, Jake Hecla, Sean Kelleher, Isaac Linder, Reilly McVay, Daniel Olson, Beau Skalley, Brian Slack, McKenna Slack, Nick Uselman, Monika Weber and Holden Wendling.

Magdalen chips in for Chehalis flood victims
St. Mary Magdalen School in south Everett recently hosted a Gifts from the Heart toy and book sale to help benefit Chehalis flood relief.
The 430 preschool through eighth-grade students and parents brought enough new and used toys and books to fill more than 10 tables in their large multiĀpurpose room.
The students went by classes throughout the school day to shop for treasures. Many of the students just donated money without buying anything and others said, “Just keep the change.”
Through the purchases and donations the students raised $2,921.50 to add to their previous efforts of $8,438.26, $875.00 in Safeway gift certificates and more than 3,000 pounds of clothes, toys, and household items.
Students at St. Mary Magdalen are encouraged to give their time for the local and global community as part of the school’s mission statement.
Everett cheer team qualifies for nationals
During a December regional competition, Everett High School cheerleaders placed first and second in the all-girl stunt division and first in the co-ed stunt division.
The individual performances of team members was so impressive that each qualified to compete in the annual Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) Individual Stunt Nationals at Disney World.
Qualifying does not require personal appearances in Florida, said cheer advisor Rachelle Whitfield. Instead each team member is sending qualifying videos to be judged.
“Such are the wonders of today’s technology,” said principal Catherine Matthews. “It is great that our team will be seen and judged by the nation’s top cheerleading experts. We know right here that they are the greatest team, and we are so proud that individually they will be recognized for their talents and the time they put into perfect spirit routines for our school.”
Results of the individual video competition are expected by Feb. 8.
“This is a huge accomplishment for the team; we can’t wait to bring even more pride and honor to EHS with a national cheer title,” Whitfield said. “I couldn’t be more proud to coach such a dedicated team.”
