School Life, Winners: Marysville teacher honored for making global difference

Ryan Hauck’s commitment to education has taken him well beyond the classroom walls of Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

And his efforts to promote international understanding hasn’t escaped the notice of the Seattle-based World Affairs Council, which recently named Hauck a World Educator Award winner.

The history and social sciences department chairman was recognized for his strong commitment to global education through his work at Marysville-Pilchuck and in Nigeria.

In making the award, the council said Hauck brings the world into his classroom and school by actively engaging students to analyze the importance of living in an interconnected world.

One of his most recent global projects was in the Niger Delta, establishing a sister-school relationship between his high school and a remote village school in Oporoza along with a village library.

After an assembly last spring, Marysville-Pilchuck students raised $2,500 in scholarship money for students in the village who can’t afford to go to school.

“Ryan brings his own real-life experiences into the classroom so that his students begin to understand the value of cross-cultural understanding and humanitarian action,” the council wrote.

Hauck said he is thankful for the help close to home.

“I have sincerely appreciated all of the support given to me from district and school administration,” he said. “It has been a wonderful experience to get students actively involved as global citizens. Not only are they working on improving their own literacy skills, but supporting the development of literacy in rural Nigeria.”

Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa of Snohomish and Lake Stevens gave a $1,000 scholarship to Erin Frasier, a graduate of Lake Stevens High School. She is a senior at Western Washington University in Bellingham, majoring in health education.
