Genealogy group meets Monday

The Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society plans to meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the society’s library, 135 N. Olympic Ave.

Everett

Hear where city candidates stand

The League of Women Voters of Snohomish County, KSER (90.7 FM) and The Herald plan to host two city council candidate forums on July 9 and 10.

The question-and-answer sessions will begin at 4:30 p.m. both days at the Historic Everett Theatre, 2911 Colby Ave. The forums are free and open to the public.

KSER plans to air a live broadcast of the forums, and Comcast Cable Channel 21 will also record the debates for rebroadcast.

Ten candidates in the city, including three incumbents, are looking to fill four citywide council positions.

Island County

Red Cross offers safety classes

The Island County branch of the American Red Cross has scheduled several health and safety classes for July. Classes include Wilderness First Aid, HIV/AIDS, and Infant and Child CPR. The classes cost between $35 and $85 each.

The classes are scheduled to take place at 1010 W. Ault Field Road in Oak Harbor.

Free lunch served at senior center

A free lunch for seniors is served Fridays at the Lake Stevens Senior Center. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the center, 1808 Main St.

Lynnwood

Police seeking Night Out parties

Residents who’d like to host block parties as part of National Night Out Against Crime are asked to call and register their events with the Lynnwood Police Department.

National Night Out Against Crime, scheduled for Aug. 7, is a nationwide event in which people turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and go outside to meet their neighbors. Many neighborhoods hold barbecues and block parties.

Lynnwood police and firefighters plan to tour city neighborhoods that register their block parties with the police department. Police plan to distribute free booklets on crime prevention.

Marysville

Civil service panel has an opening

The city has a vacancy on its Civil Service Commission.

The volunteer panel develops rules for the city’s police department for promotions, eligibility lists for hiring, reviewing candidate applications and making hiring recommendations.

Board members must have lived in the city for at least three years.

Mill Creek

Canine contest leaping into city

A regional jumping dog contest is scheduled to make a stop in Mill Creek this weekend.

The Puget Sound DockDogs Big Air Cup is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Mill Creek Town Center during the Meet Me in Mill Creek Festival.

During the contest, dogs jump for distance from a platform into a swimming pool. More than 100 teams of dog handlers competed in the first round of competition in Kirkland in early June. The winning dog in that event jumped more than 24 feet.

The contest is open to local dogs Saturday and Sunday. Early registration closes Thursday and costs $20. Registration is expected to be available the day of the contests. Spectators can watch for free.

Arts council holds monthly meeting

The Monroe Arts Council plans to hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. July 16 at The Art Merchant International, 17161 Beaton Road SE in the Fryeland industrial park area of Monroe.

Baseball camp set at Kamiak field

Children are invited to participate in the Mukilteo Summer Baseball Camp planned for next month at the Kamiak High School baseball field.

The camp is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon July 23-26 at the high school at 10801 Harbour Pointe Blvd. The camp, to be run by high school players and coaches, is for children ages 5 to 12.

Snohomish

Breakfast for seniors set

The Snohomish Senior Center plans to have a pancake and waffle breakfast 8:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael’s Church, 1514 Pine Ave.

The cost is $4 for adults and $3 children. The breakfast includes pancakes, waffles, French toast, eggs to order, biscuits and gravy, ham or bacon, juice and coffee or tea.

Proceeds from this event help support the 41 programs and services offered at the center.

Stanwood

Center offers field trips for kids

The Stanwood Community and Senior Center plans to offer several field trips for kids this summer.

The excursions include roller skating and trips to a kangaroo farm, water slides and the Arlington Air Show. Costs vary per trip.
