Love story

Published 9:00 pm Tuesday, May 29, 2007

Frank Fisher was introduced to Dorothy Macalusco in 1945 when he returned home to New York after serving more than four years in the Army during World War II.

Frank felt as soon as he met her that she was the girl for him.

“Right then I knew,” Frank said. “I met Dorothy and we kind of clicked right away.”

As the couple got to know each other, they realized that all along they had lived in the same neighborhood, only about a half-mile from one another.

Dorothy was an only child. Her father was Italian, her mother German. She loved to make outfits for costume parties. When she and Frank began dating they would win prizes when they turned up in costumes such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Dorothy made the mouse heads out of papier-mache.

During their courtship Frank and Dorothy would go hiking. They also loved to listen to Dean Martin on the radio and still tune in to hear his daughter Deana on KIXI.

Frank surprised Dorothy when he asked her to marry him.

“I just asked,” Frank said. “And here we are 60 years later.”

Frank and Dorothy Fisher of Everett will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary at home.

The couple were married May 31, 1947, in New York City. The mutual friend who introduced the couple served as maid of honor.

Frank and Dorothy could not take a honeymoon because he was about to take the police test for the New York Police Department. In 1948, he began his career there.

Like most other marriages, the road in the beginning was new.

“The first years were tough sledding,” Frank said. “But we’ve lived a good life.”

The couple moved to New Hampshire when Frank worked with Volkswagen of America. Dorothy painted using a silk screen. She was a wonderful artist and a good seamstress, Frank said.

Frank later worked for the local sheriff’s department. The family lived in New Hampshire for 25 years.

“I’ve been around,” Frank said.

During his service in WWII, Frank traveled as far as the former Czechoslovakia.

Frank and Dorothy moved to Washington 13 years ago to be near their daughter Judy, who lives in Edmonds. Their son Frank lives in New Hampshire. The couple have two grandchildren.

Frank’s advice to couples who are just starting out in marriage is to keep smiling.

“Keep a happy face and look on the lighter side of life,” Frank said.

It has helped that he and Dorothy gave each other leeway in their relationship. Dorothy still goes golfing every Tuesday.

Frank describes Dorothy as a great partner, someone who raised their children well, is a good cook and barber to Frank for the past 30 years.

“I was lucky,” Frank said. “I was very lucky.”
