Hampton Jazz winners

High school and secondary school vocal groups, bands and combos took the stage Feb. 23 and 24 at the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho in Moscow. Groups from the western U.S. and Canada performed for adjudicators to earn Outstanding Young Artist awards. Local winners:

The following students are among those named local National Merit Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Foundation. Finalists will be considered for one of more than 8,200 National Merit Scholarships to be awarded this spring. Finalists represent less than one-half of 1 percent of each state’s graduating class.

Foundation awards classroom grants

The Snohomish Education Foundation received 34 grant requests from teachers this school year and awarded 26 classroom grants totaling $15,994.41. This continues the foundation’s efforts to provide students with educational experiences that otherwise would not be funded. Grants helped pay for such things as reading and writing software, precision machining instruments, a “Day of the Arts” and exercise equipment adapted for children with special needs.

Americanism Essay winners announced

The following students were winners in the Everett Elks No. 479’s recent Americanism Essay Contest. Three students will have their essays sent to the state level for judging.

Division I (sixth grade):

Quinn is ‘Who’s Who’

Quinn Coate, son of Monique and Rusty Coate of Marysville, will appear in the 2006-07 national edition of “Who’s Who Among Outstanding Students in America.” Quinn is a sixth-grader at Cedarcrest School.
