DOT should change their signage

The August 14 article titled “Infuriating, but merging late is legal, blocking isn’t,” offering advice about merging in a closed lane situation, was both interesting and informative. I’ve often cheered the driver who straddled two lanes (in some cases a lane and the shoulder when the “impolite” were using the shoulder to bypass the polite).

After learning that it is more efficient to use both lanes until reaching the merge, it seems that the DOT should change their signs, because many of us think a sign that says “merge” means that we, and other drivers, should merge. Since the signs don’t mean merge, they should be changed to say what they mean, that is, “merge ahead” or merge in one-half mile.”
