Sail: Or not, in What-You-Gotta Regatta

Got a small non-motorized boat in the back yard gathering dust?

The Sail What-You-Gotta Regatta is set for 12-5 p.m. Saturday at Lone Lake public access, 5075 Lone Lake Road in Langley. All small sail and paddle boats are invited, including canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and row boats.

No boat? No problem — come and take a ride with the South Whidbey Yacht Club.

There will be games, sailboat rides, free hot dogs, a sail-by parade, racing demonstration, and entertainment. There will be awards for fastest Pelican and El Toro, most outstanding boat that can float, and best decorated boat.

Immunize: Beat the back-to-school rush

Now is the time to get kids in to see their health care providers for required immunizations, yearly well-child checks, and sports physicals, remind staff with the Washington State Department of Health.

“Immunizations are the best tool we have to protect students from serious diseases that can spread quickly through schools,” State Health Officer Dr. Kathy Lofy said.

Parents can find the immunization requirements to start school and attend child care at www.doh.wa.gov. There are new requirements for the chickenpox vaccine for grades 7-12. Getting the vaccine for whooping cough is of particular concern with recent outbreaks.

Glimpse: Ospreys are nesting again

Now is the chance to catch a glimpse of Arlington’s osprey chicks nesting at the Old Town Stormwater Wetland.

The pair of ospreys had two chicks last year in the same nest. Some people hypothesize that the pair had to temporarily move downstream away from the Oso mudslide as the water was too clouded with sediment for them to see and capture the fish. City of Arlington staff and frequent wetland bird watchers were excited to see the pair show up again this year.

Visitors should feel free to walk the trails and enjoy all the wildlife at the wetland. Please do not disturb the birds. The nesting platform was built by Eagle Scout Kevin VanArmen, and visitors can use the recently built bird blind constructed by Eagle Scout Will Ruefenacht to relax and enjoy nature.

To get there, park at Haller Park, 1100 West Ave., and walk the Eagle Trail west to the Stormwater Wetland Park.
