EVERETT — A Snohomish County judge sentenced a woman to six months in jail Thursday for pushing a 9-year-old boy’s face and hand onto a hot stove burner in 2014.
It was the end of a case that has lingered as Cathleen Arthur waffled about taking responsibility for her actions and later failed to show up for a court hearing.
Arthur, 36, was ordered not to have contact with the boy, now 13, for a decade. He and his mother lived with Arthur at the time of the assault.
The boy said Arthur burned him after she caught him playing with matches. She admitted she was angry and wanted to teach the boy a lesson, according to court records.
The boy needed surgery for his injuries.
Arthur pleaded guilty to second-degree domestic violence assault. She faced up to nine months in jail under the state’s sentencing guidelines.
Superior Court Judge Joseph Wilson advised Arthur on Thursday that her conviction was a strike under the state’s persistent offender law. Arthur asked if she’d ever be able to vote again.
