Everett student part of winning radio station
Rubero Seth, an international business major from Everett, was a part of the KCR College Radio team at San Diego State University, a student-run radio station that won Best Online Station at the Intercollegiate Broadcast System Golden Microphone Awards for 2015.
Rotary honors students
The Port Gardner Rotary Club recently honored its Students of the Month from Everett Community College for April and May.
Madeline Lootens was honored by the English department as an overall excellent student — “one of the best.” She made a short film adapting Franz Kafka’s “The Burrow” and was selected for an internship with Seattle Magazine.
Alexis Spencer was honored by the computer information systems department for making excellent progress in the program while also helping others. Spencer takes classes full-time while working full-time and serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Kids release ladybugs
The Center for Families at Edmonds Community College celebrated the Week of the Young Child (April 12-18), highlighted by its 10th annual ladybug release, held every Earth Day.
“This event is good for the Earth and connects the children with learning experiences in the classroom,” Director Lisa Neumann said. “It is safe for the children and they really enjoy it.”
Lighthouse winners
The Mukilteo School District recently honored its staff winners of the Lighthouse Award for the second semester. The winners were Bill Cosello, an English teacher at Kamiak High School, and Lou Farthing, the accounting technician at Kamiak. The Lighthouse Award is considered the highest honor that can be bestowed on a Mukilteo School District employee.
Cyber-security certificate recognized
Ten years ago, Edmonds Community College instructors Steve Hailey and Mike Andrew created the CyberSecurity Forensic Analyst certification to fill the need for a competency-based certification in the field of digital forensics.
In a recently published report by Foote Research Group, an IT industry benchmark research and advisory firm, the CSFA certification tied for third place worldwide for a certification earning the highest pay premiums in 2014. This was out of 357 professional certifications. In addition, the CSFA was named one of 2015’s top 10 certifications to have by channelinsider.com.
Students volunteer
Students in kindergarten through eighth grade at Everett Christian School left their classrooms on May 15 to serve the local community in several ways for their annual Serve-A-Thon. Middle school students helped the Everett Parks department by planting and cleaning the flower pots downtown. Third- and fourth-grade students worked at the Volunteers of America Everett Food Bank by sorting 1,000 pounds of canned goods; they also planted a school garden with vegetables to be harvested in the fall to be donated to the food bank. Students in kindergarten to second grade visited two local retirement centers to sing songs.
Dancer selected for summer academy
Everett resident Samantha Duvall is among more than 200 young dancers from 21 states who will spend up to five weeks in Columbus, Ohio, this summer for the BalletMet Dance Academy 2015 Summer Intensive. It is one of the nation’s largest studios associated with a professional company. Duvall was selected during a nationwide audition tour.
