Leading the way

Granite Falls High School senior Becky Gilbertson had a highlighter in her hand Tuesday before morning announcements were read. She carefully scanned over a list, pausing to help another student understand what she needed to say over the school’s intercom. “By Friday you’ll be like, ‘Wait, why don’t
I get to do another? I’m ready now,'” she said.
It’s all part of Gilbertson’s morning routine.
“That’s one of my jobs as (Associated Student Body) public relations officer,” she said.
Q: Do you ever read the morning announcements yourself?
A: For the leadership class that we have here it’s part of our responsibilities to do the announcements for a week each. When they’re not here or they’re sick, I read them myself. After the first week you’re fine, and I did them for a month or two last year so I’m perfectly fine with it now.
Q: What other responsibilities do you have as ASB public relations officer?
A: I make sure that all the posters that are put up around the school have things spelled right, don’t have anything that we wouldn’t want people reading. Anything that goes out to the teachers I make sure is correct.
Q: I heard you’re involved in several extracurricular activities.
A: Ballroom dance. It started here last year when Mr. Roehl came. He got a ballroom club together, and we had tryouts and had a competitive team go to Idaho. We just had tryouts. We’re currently in need of male participants.
Q: Is there something you really want to learn this year in ballroom dance or improve on?
A: I’m really excited about our Latin medley routine. Latin is just a fun dance.
Q: Do you have a song you can’t get out of your head or a musical group you enjoy listening to right now?
A: I do like to sing. I really love Fleetwood Mac at the moment.
Q: What else are you planning to be involved in during your senior year?
A: I’ve done tennis. I’ll be a four-year letterman if I make varsity (tennis) again this year. I’m in leadership. I helped with the class float for Railroad Days. I have an SAT test that day so I’m putting in all my effort before, since I can’t be there to help.
Q: Your academics are also important to you. I heard you have a perfect 4.0 GPA.
A: Yes. This year I have three AP (advanced placement) classes. I’m also taking sustainable green technology and design. That’s a first-year class for our school focusing on learning about green technology in our world and possibly helping our school become more technologically advanced.
Q: That sounds interesting. What have you done so far in the class?
A: We’re getting to know different types of (green) systems. We’re going to go more in depth and actually learn how they work. We have a culminating class project where we’re going to do some of the different types of things. We’ll possibly be making some compost bins for our school to see if we can compost some of our lunch waste.
Q: Where do you want to go to college?
A: My first choice would probably be the U-Dub (University of Washington) because they have a really good civil engineering program there. I’ve looked into other places like Seattle University.
Q: Is that your favorite class?
A: I don’t know, I really like my classes. Leadership is one of my favorites because it’s more of the activities side of school. The sustainable green technology I like too because I want to be a civil engineer, so I’m really interested in the environmental side and figuring out how things work. I’ve always liked math and science. Calculus is fun.
Q: What else are you looking forward to this year?
A: Senior year dances are probably the best. All the senior events I’m excited for.
Q: What is the annual Cat Fight?
A: It’s the big basketball game between us and Lakewood (High School). We schedule a girl’s varsity game and a boy’s varsity game for the same night. It’s also got a charity fundraiser with it that’s different every year. Granite Falls has won for the past two years, and they’re coming here this year so it’s going to be awesome.
Q: Three-peat?
A: Yes, definitely.
