HEADS UP

Cedar Wood upgrades

The Everett School District is seeking bids for safety upgrades at Cedar Wood Elementary, south of Mill Creek. The school board approved the next steps at the Jan. 23 meeting.

Cedar Wood is supposed to get a video intercom at the entrance. With the intercom in place, visitors outside of drop-off and pick-up times must request to be buzzed in. Additional fencing also is planned.

The work is scheduled for completion this summer, with an estimated price of $500,000. The funding source is the 2016 capital levy. Similar projects have been done at Hawthorne Elementary and Silver Firs Elementary.

Clinic zoning up again

The Everett City Council on Wednesday is expected to revisit potential zoning changes regarding methadone clinics. The city currently bans the clinics downtown. The issue came up for debate, and Everett’s attorneys determined the ban likely violates federal disability laws. The planning commission has recommended removing methadone-specific language from the codes. That would mean treating the clinics the same as other medical businesses. The city has one methadone clinic, in the south end. The same operator has been seeking a second Everett site to the north. No council vote is scheduled at this point.
