Hands on History at library
The Everett Public Library continues its Hands on History series at 6 p.m. Tuesday, when staff will present tips and tricks for researching local history and genealogy using computer resources. Participants will be able to practice their skills, get guidance from Northwest Room historians, and talk to others about their projects. The program will be in the activity room of the library at 2702 Hoyt Ave.

County Council night meeting
The Snohomish County Council plans its first night meeting of the year Monday.
It’s set for 6 p.m. in Edmonds City Council chambers, 250 5th Ave. N. In 2016, voters in the county approved a charter amendment requiring an evening meeting in each of the five County Council districts at least once per year. This week’s meeting is in Council District 3. Each meeting includes a public comment period.

Free swim lessons
Any school-age child in the Edmonds School District who does not know how to swim can receive a swim voucher for free beginning lessons.
Families should contact their local pool for more information. Participating pools are the Lynnwood Recreation Center, Mountlake Terrace Recreation Pavilion, Yost Pool in Edmonds, and the Dale Turner Family YMCA in Shoreline.
The program is made possible through a grant by Verdant Health Commission. The free beginner lessons are in addition to free swim lessons offered to every third-grade student in the school district.

HEADS UP
Cedar Wood upgrades
The Everett School District is seeking bids for safety upgrades at Cedar Wood Elementary, south of Mill Creek. The school board approved the next steps at the Jan. 23 meeting.
Cedar Wood is supposed to get a video intercom at the entrance. With the intercom in place, visitors outside of drop-off and pick-up times must request to be buzzed in. Additional fencing also is planned.
The work is scheduled for completion this summer, with an estimated price of $500,000. The funding source is the 2016 capital levy. Similar projects have been done at Hawthorne Elementary and Silver Firs Elementary.

Clinic zoning up again
The Everett City Council on Wednesday is expected to revisit potential zoning changes regarding methadone clinics. The city currently bans the clinics downtown. The issue came up for debate, and Everett’s attorneys determined the ban likely violates federal disability laws. The planning commission has recommended removing methadone-specific language from the codes. That would mean treating the clinics the same as other medical businesses. The city has one methadone clinic, in the south end. The same operator has been seeking a second Everett site to the north.No council vote is scheduled at this point.
