The Washington School Safety Organization on July 24 awarded Marysville Pilchuck High School resource officer Chris Sutherland with the Washington State School Resource Officer of the Year Award.
Sutherland was honored by school administration and security staff for his courage under pressure, commitment to school safety, and efforts to support student success through mentorship and community partnerships.
The officer was one of the first to respond following a deadly student shooting on Oct. 24, 2014. The five who died would have graduated in June. At the commencement ceremony, Sutherland was among those to address the graduates. “You are all my heroes,” he said.
