Special film screenings in Snohomish County

Wilder Film Series: Next in the series is “The Apartment” on Dec. 19 at the Evergreen Branch Library, 9512 Evergreen Way, Everett. Free. A screening and discussion runs from 12:30 to 4 p.m. of the 1960 movie. Jack Lemmon climbs the company ladder by letting his superiors use his apartment for afternoon affairs, but complications ensue when he and his boss (Fred MacMurray) both fall for Shirley MacLaine. The Evergreen Cinema Society explores a dozen of screenwriter Billy Wilder’s finest, the last Wednesday of every month at 12:30.

Short films: Filmmakers are invited to submit noir-inspired short films of five minutes or less to the Whidbey Island Film Festival’s ShortsFest. Selected films will be eligible to receive jury-selected awards and prizes. More at www.WhidbeyIslandFilmFestival.org. Deadline is Dec. 20.

Maltby Meaningful Movies: “Reinventing Power,” which takes a look at ways that clean, cheap and renewable power can help to clean the air and to provide family jobs, is showing at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 4 at the Sharingwood Association, 22105 East Lost Lake Road, Snohomish.

Sno-King Meaningful Movies: “Chasing Coral” is showing at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at Edmonds Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 8109 224 St. SW, Edmonds. Coral reefs are the nursery for all life in the oceans. Yet with carbon emissions warming the seas, a phenomenon called “coral bleaching” — a sign of mass coral death — has been accelerating around the world. The film took more than three years to shoot and is the result of 500-plus hours of underwater footage. More at www.meaningful movies.org.

Edmonds Center for the Arts Film Cabaret Series: “Crazy Heart, a 2009 movie with Jeff Bridges as a down-and-out songwriter who tries to turn his life around after beginning a relationship with a young journalist, played by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Edmonds Diversity Film Series: Six free screenings of topical films on themes related to diversity, inclusion and equity on third Saturdays at noon at the Edmonds Theater, 415 Main St., Edmonds.
