State volleyball roundup: Lake Stevens reaches 4A semifinals

YAKIMA — Lake Stevens is one win away from playing for a 4A state volleyball title.

Thanks to a gritty five-set win over No. 5 Curtis in the quarterfinals on Friday night, the fourth-seeded Vikings advanced to the state semifinals and will face No. 1 Puyallup in a 9:45 a.m. match on Saturday at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

The winner earns a trip to the state-title match, set to be played at 3:15 p.m.

Lake Stevens fell behind 2-1 in the match against Curtis, but rallied to win the final two sets to reach the semifinals.

The Vikings began the day with a 3-0 win over No. 13 Richland in the round of 16.

In other local 4A action, No. 12 Jackson rebounded from a 3-0 loss to Curtis in the round of 16 to beat Richland 3-1 and remained alive into Day 2 in the seventh/eighth place consolation bracket.

Jackson will face No. 8 West Valley (Yakima) in a loser-out consolation match at 11:45 a.m. Saturday.

YAKIMA — Fourteenth-seeded Lynnwood lost to No. 15 Kelso, 3-0, in a loser-out consolation match on the final day of the 3A state tournament at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

Lynnwood was the lone local team to reach Day 2 of the tournament after a 3-0 loss to No. 3 Peninsula in the round of 16, and a 3-2 win over Wesco-rival Snohomish, seeded No. 6, in a loser-out consolation match.

Lynnwood was playing in its first state tournament since 2003, when the Royals finished a program-best seventh place.
