The Snohomish County Sports Hall of Fame’s class of 2023 will be inducted at the organization’s annual banquet on Sept. 27 at the Edward D. Hansen Conference Center at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett. Here’s the last in a series of bios of the 2023 class highlighted by The Herald:

1987 Cascade High School boys soccer team

Inducted as: Team

A high school boys soccer dynasty began in earnest in the spring of 1987 when Cascade won its first AAA state championship.

The Bruins, under coach Pat Sullivan, were already a strong program, having won six consecutive Wesco championships coming into the year. But in 1987 the team reached its apex. Led by future high school All-Americans Clint Carnell, Chris Henderson and Sean Henderson, Cascade went a perfect 20-0, outscoring its opponents 75-11 and beating Kennedy 2-1 in the state championship game.

Cascade had a veteran-laden team, led by 13 seniors. Nine Bruins were named to the All-Wesco team, including senior David Clark, who won the Walsh-Platt Student-Athlete of the Year award. However, the team’s underclassmen were its stars, as junior Carnell led the team in scoring with 26 goals, including a goal and an assist in the state championship game, while Chris Henderson was a sophomore and Sean Henderson was a freshman — both Hendersons went on to play professionally and are Snohomish County Sports Hall of Famers. Other members of the team who played college soccer included seniors Noel Soderblom, Eric Christiansen, Phil Bartlow, Jason French and John Wilson.

The 1987 season began a stretch where Cascade reached the state championship game in five consecutive years. The Bruins also lifted the title in 1989.
