Boeing adding new space in Everett despite worker reduction

EVERETT — Boeing is expanding the amount of space it occupies in Everett, leasing nearly 279,000 square feet in an industrial complex at 5900 36th Ave. W, according to a report by real estate firm Kidder Mathews.
The lease for Boeing begins this month on a 278,937-square-foot building in an industrial complex called Bridge Point Everett 500 – Building A.
It’s unclear what Boeing plans to do with the warehouse building, which is 2 miles from its Everett Plant at Paine Field.
Boeing spokesperson Ted Land declined to comment.
Bridge Port Everett 500 – Building A is part of a three-building warehouse complex that was completed in late 2023, containing nearly 500,000 square feet.
The new building for Boeing comes as the aerospace company has been in an employee reduction mode.
In October, CEO Kelly Ortberg announced that Boeing would lose 10% of its workforce.
Boeing facilities in Everett saw layoffs of 1,422 employees in two worker reductions in January and February — part of cost-cutting efforts by the company to reduce overhead and regain profitability.
Boeing has more than 30,000 workers in Everett, most of whom work at its plant in Paine Field — the largest manufacturing plant in the world, covering more than 98 acres.
“It’s unclear why they need the new space when they are cutting jobs,” said Elliott Krivenko, the director of market analytics at real estate analytic firm CoStar in Seattle.
Any plan to expand would require federal approval. Boeing is the port’s largest customer, importing parts from around the world for use at the Everett aerospace manufacturing facility.
City of Everett Planning Department records show that Boeing sought a permit on January 31 to construct a conference room, an employee break room, a data room and open office space. The permit was approved on March 31.
City records show that Boeing will occupy the entire industrial building.
Krivenko said Boeing occupies seven buildings in Everett, taking up around 10 million square feet of space.
He said Boeing leased the most new space in the Puget Sound region in 2003 and 2004 — around 3 million square feet — but noted the activity did not take place in the Everett area. Krivenko said Boeing had focused on other areas where it already had facilities, such as Kent in southern King County.
