The documentary “Unbeaten” will either make you feel very grateful or very motivated.
It made me feel both. While I watched the film at home, I vowed to keep going to my 5:45 a.m. cycling class five days a week and I told myself that no matter how crappy I might feel at any given day, I needed to appreciate what I have.
This Oscar-nominated documentary is a journey of will. Produced by Everett native Greg Strom, “Unbeaten” chronicles the jaw-dropping “toughest race in the world” where 31 paraplegics in wheelchairs and hand cycles spend six days and 267 miles from Fairbanks to Anchorage trying to be the winner of Sadler’s Alaska Challenge.
The course is 55 miles a day and winds through Denali National Park. The film has magnificent moments of scenery and emotion.
In addition to seeing the movie, the audience will get to see Oscar Oz Sanchez, current paralympic gold medalist and said to be the fastest man in the world in a hand cycle, who will make an appearance. There will also be a live performance by local band, Ricky John & Friends.
“Unbeaten” will screen at 7:30 p.m. March 5 at the Everett Civic Auditorium, 2415 Colby Ave., Everett. Admission is free.
