Flute, violin, harpsichord trios explored in concert

Published 9:00 pm Thursday, February 16, 2006

A concert of baroque masterpieces and contemporary works will be performed Sunday at “Celestial Harmonies,” a Concerts at the Floyd presentation in Stanwood.

The artists are flutist Jeffrey Cohan, violinist Svend Ronning and harpsichordist George Shangrow. The program includes trio sonatas for those three instruments by J.S. Bach and Felix Telemann along with Jacques Ibert’s “Deux Interludes,” Bohuslav Martinu’s “Promenades” and Georges Migot’s “Trio.”

The trio sonatas on the program for flute, violin and harpsichord are fairly well known, but few are aware that several 20th-century composers composed for this celestial combination of instruments.

The performers bring impressive musical credentials to the stage.

Cohan and Shangrow have been concert collaborators for more than 30 years, performing throughout the United States and Europe.

Cohan has received international acclaim as a modern flutist and as one of the foremost specialists on transverse flutes, performing music from the renaissance through the early 19th century.

Shangrow is music director of Orchestra Seattle and the Seattle Chamber Singers, and director of the Seattle Conservatory of Music. He has been featured guest conductor with many orchestras and has conducted many world premieres.

The Concerts at the Floyd series is a presentation of the Stanwood Area Historical Society.

Pianist for the concert is Jeremy Young.

The harp and bassoon are two of the most challenging instruments to play and with distinctly different voices. It’s a testament to the proficiency of the Wirts that both are members of the Everett Symphony. Both instruments get to shine in Sunday’s concert, performing in duets and separately with piano accompaniment. Tiffany Wirt showcases her instrumental and vocal skills in three selections.

And on a lighter note, the Wirts team up for “Fluffy’s Harp” from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” by John Williams.
