Great Plant Pick: Abelia x grandiflora ‘Kaleidoscope’

What: The foliage of this almost whimsical abelia is transformed by a kaleidoscope of colors over the course of spring, summer and fall. In early spring, the leaves of Abelia x grandiflora “Kaleidoscope” unfold with a bright yellow edge and light green center and then mature to a variegation of darker green and golden to creamy yellow. As autumn progresses, splashes of red, orange, golden yellow and green take center stage. A profusion of lightly scented white flowers attract bees and butterflies from summer through fall.
Where: Plant this gold-variegated abelia in full sun for the greatest effect on the foliage, but it will tolerate light shade. For the best growth, plant this shrub in a rich soil, although it will do fine in clay or sandy soils as long as they are well-drained.
Size: This compact shrub grows to be 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide when mature.
Care: Water occasionally — every 10 to 14 days during dry periods — or regularly — once per week — for more lush growth. While generally a compact plant, if an occasional water-sprout pops up, it may be pruned to keep a neater appearance.
