The Puget Sound waterways are popular places in the spring and sea kayakers are quick to take advantage.
But just jumping in a kayak and dumping yourself in the Sound is not advised.
“There are so many things that go into being a sea kayaker,” said Ginger Stackpole, chairwoman for the Everett Mountaineers Sea Kayaking division.
“You have to have the right clothing, the right equipment, and you have to know how the tides and currents affect the boat. You don’t want to end up in the newspaper for the wrong reasons.”
Beginning April 4 the Everett Mountaineers is offering a monthlong basic sea kayaking course, which covers gear, navigation, safety and more.
You don’t have to own a kayak to take the class. In fact, Stackpole said they encourage people to wait before buying one until after the course.
The class includes four lectures, a pool session, an open water session and two student paddles.
