It’s starting to look like the most rock ‘n’ roll movie of 2009 is going to be “Where the Wild Things Are.”
Let’s break it down. The movie was directed by Spike Jonze, who is responsible for some of the past decade’s most inspired videos. It was co-written by Dave Eggers, an author who briefly wrote about music for Spin. It’s soundtrack is being handled in part by Karen O, the frontwoman for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. And now there’s this trailer, featuring an Arcade Fire song.
See the trailer below. Be amazed. Then check out new clips from Neil Young and Lily Allen.
Arcade Fire – “Wake Up” – “Where the Wild Things Are” trailer
“I didn’t want to wake you up,” a monster tells Max in the “Where the Wild Things Are” trailer, right before the opening strum of Arcade Fire’s song. As teasers go, this one definitely whets the appetite. The visuals look pretty ridiculous, and the 2004 song could have been written for the trailer. That said, it’s admittedly hard to tell how they expanded on the book’s short story. Max is older, clearly, bored in school, dealing with some angst (?) over a single (?) mother seeing a new (?) guy. Time will tell. I’m at least anxious to find out.
Lily Allen — “Not Fair” — Video
I won’t lie: after repeat listens the new Lily Allen disc isn’t doing it for me like her first album. Some of the songs feel a bit too precious. But this single, with its PG-13 lyrics and country twang, hits all sorts of pleasure centers. The video has fun with the song’s Tennessee twang, tossing the trendy Brit onto the old Porter Wagoner Show. Fun!
Neil Young – “Cough Up the Bucks” – Video
“Where did all the money go? Where did all the cash flow?” Young coos, before this new song slips into an aggro riff. The video is a step down from his last one, which at least had a sense of humor. In this new one, Young seems like an angry old dude ready to hand out pamphlets outside a co-op. And did the entire budget go into renting that limo? Yikes.
