LAKE STEVENS — A woman died in a house fire early Saturday near Lake Stevens, officials said.

Around 12:20 a.m. Saturday, witnesses reported a house fully engulfed in flames in the 600 block of Carlson Road near Machias, about 3 miles east of Lake Stevens, according to Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue.

When fire crews arrived, they found the front door had already burnt down, according to the department.

Firefighters attacked the fire from all sides of the house. They searched the house, but “difficult conditions” prevented them from making it far inside, authorities said.

Crews found a woman dead in a back bedroom, said Peter Mongillo, a spokesperson for Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue.

Within 20 minutes of the crews’ arrival, the fire was under control. The woman was the only person in the house, Mongillo said.

Snohomish County Fire Marshals were investigating the cause of the fire Monday. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the deceased.
