Everett: Railroad work near Howarth Park

Workers have been busy near Howarth Park cutting down trees and moving dirt.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe is completing preliminary engineering work, including grading and drainage design. The work is in preparation for eventual construct

ion of a new switch cross-over design track, said the railroad’s spokesman Gus Melonas.

No timeline has been established yet for when the switch work will occur.

Tree maintenance is also happening in this area and other along Puget Sound, he said.

Everett: No raises for mayor, city council

The City of Everett Citizens’ Commission on Salaries of Elected Officials finalized the 2012-13 Salary Scheduled at the conclusion of its public hearing Thursday.

The salary schedule does not include raises for City Council members or the mayor for 2012, and includes a raise in 2013 based upon a sliding scale percentage of the Consumer Price Index.

The final Salary Schedule indicates that the city of Everett’s two municipal court judge salaries will be equal to the Washington State District Court Judge adjustments.

Mayor Ray Stephanson currently makes $154,956.72 annually and City Council members earn $26,279.52. City Council president Shannon Affholter makes more: $34,164.

By comparison, Gov. Chris Gregoire’s annual salary is $166,891, the mayor of Seattle gets $170,986, and the Bellevue city manager, who’s responsible for day-to-day operations, earns $224,430.

Lake Stevens: Volunteers needed for commission post

The city is accepting applications for one vacant position and one upcoming vacancy on the Police Civil Service Commission.

The city’s three Police Civil Service Commission members serve six-year terms and are appointed by the mayor with confirmation by the City Council. Interested applicants must complete and submit an application to be considered for an interview by Mayor Vern Little.

Members of the Civil Service Commission serve as volunteers. They must have lived in the city for at least three years and be a registered voter in Snohomish County.

Monroe: Trout pond at upcoming expo

Snohomish County’s spring recreation expo the weekend after next will include a live trout pond hosted by the Everett Steelhead and Salmon Club.

The 37-inch-deep, 20-by-8-foot pond will give youngsters a chance to fish.

It’s just one of the outdoor and leisure-related exhibits planned for the Evergreen State Fairgrounds on April 30 and May 1. Admission and parking are free. Carnival rides and games cost money.

The first-ever Sky Valley BBQ Championship is planned as well.

Expo hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 30 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 1.
