MUKILTEO — Police have recovered the remains of a missing Lynnwood-area man.

Jose Sanchez Diaz, 20, was last seen alive on Aug. 29. The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday confirmed that his remains were recovered on July 22.

Sanchez Diaz’ car was located earlier this month in Puget Sound near the Mukilteo ferry dock. The recovery effort took time to organize, as the remains were inside the car, which was under about 50 feet of water. The vehicle itself has not been recovered, sheriff’s spokeswoman Shari Ireton said. It’s not clear when that might happen.

Sanchez Diaz’ cause of death remains under investigation. A determination could take several months.

Sanchez Diaz came to the United States from Honduras at 17 and attended Mountlake Terrace High School. He was supposed to attend Edmonds Community College last fall. His foster family still lives in the area.
