Suspect sought in ambush slaying in Everett

EVERETT — A man was killed in a south Everett parking lot before dawn Monday and police are investigating to determine what sparked the gunfire.

The victim had just dropped off a woman for work at an espresso stand. The suspected gunman, the woman’s ex-boyfriend, may have been waiting in ambush nearby.

The violence sparked a manhunt Monday as Everett police said they were looking for Bud Michael Fraser, 21, of Marysville in connection with the shooting.

Fraser had previously dated the barista, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said. The relationship between the victim and the woman, both reported to be in their 20s, wasn’t immediately disclosed.

A single gunshot was reported just after 5 a.m. in a parking lot at the corner of SE Everett Mall Way and Third Avenue SE.

Cowgirls Espresso shares the lot with Gotta Lube Express and a 24-hour self-service car wash.

The victim’s body was found in the driver’s seat of a red Honda parked near the car wash. He wasn’t immediately identified.

Detectives do not believe the killing was random, Goetz said. Detectives were focused Monday on tracking the suspect and trying to comfort those who knew the victim.

“Our biggest concern is for the victim and his family,” Goetz said.

Several people congregated Monday morning to grieve. They held each other, as tears streamed down their faces.

Nearby, police collected evidence.

A yellow Camaro, parked at a neighboring McDonald’s restaurant, was seized as evidence. Detectives believe Fraser drove the car to the scene, although he is not the car’s registered owner, Goetz said.

Police released Fraser’s photo to the media Monday in an effort to find him. He is described as having a dark tan and a Mohawk-style haircut. Fraser is about 5-foot, 7-inches tall and weighs about 145 pounds, Goetz said.

A witness told police Fraser was seen walking away from the parking lot where the shooting occurred, Goetz said. He was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.

The barista was cooperating with detectives, Goetz said. She told police she did not see the shooting, he said.

Police photographers used an Everett Fire Department ladder truck to collect aerial shots of the killing scene.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s office was expected to conduct an autopsy.

The morning violence was the second homicide investigated by Everett police this year.

Prosecutors allege that on Aug. 20 David Mitchell Kopp, 19, attacked Derrick Everson, 21, from behind and stabbed him 24 times in a wooded area near Broadway.

Kopp was charged Friday with first-degree murder. He is being held in the Snohomish County Jail on $1 million bail.
