Meat and milk from cloned animals is essentially identical to that from animals that reproduced normally, a new study says. The findings should ease safety concerns by the public and regulators about eating cloned animals, said researcher Xiangzhong Yang of the Center for Regenerative Biology at the University of Connecticut. The Food and Drug Administration has asked the food industry to keep products from cloned animals out of the food chain while it considers their safety.
Pentagon to use lasers to warn pilots
The Pentagon said Monday it will use lasers to warn pilots when they’ve flown into restricted airspace near the Capitol, even though there have been more than 100 incidents nationwide since November in which laser beams have been flashed into cockpits. The aircraft all landed safely, but federal aviation officials are concerned that a laser could be used to blind pilots and cause a crash.
Senate confirms first Bush judge
The Senate on Monday confirmed the first of President Bush’s second-term judicial nominees as senators continued to argue over Democrats blocking the White House’s most wanted candidates. Senators on a 95-0 vote confirmed Paul Crotty as a U.S. District judge for New York state.
Texas: Bush warns Israeli leader
President Bush told Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Monday he must not allow further West Bank settlement growth and said Israeli and Palestinian doubts about each other were hampering peace prospects. In response, Sharon said that Israel would abide by the internationally negotiated peace plan, which calls for a settlement freeze, but would keep some large Jewish population blocs in the West Bank under its control. Sharon is visiting Bush at his Crawford ranch.
Georgia: School to pay snitches
Using revenue from its candy and soda sales, Model High School in Rome plans to pay up to $100 for information about thefts and drug or gun possession on campus. Under the new policy, a student would receive $10 for information about a theft on campus, $25 or $50 for information about drug possession, and $100 for information about gun possession or other serious felonies. Informants will not receive the reward if they are involved in the crime.
