EDMONDS — Students at Madrona K-8 School could be moving into their new campus as soon as October.
The Edmonds School District and the Olympic View Water and Sewer District reached an agreement Wednesday. The water district had raised health concerns about the new school’s water system. Construction was delayed, and students won’t begin the school year there, as initially planned.
The two agencies were in mediation for more than 11 hours. While they found a compromise, neither party can give details until both boards vote on it. That should happen Sept. 11.
Construction on Madrona is expected to be finished by Oct. 16, said Kelly Franson, spokeswoman for the Edmonds School District.
The district plans to work with staff and families to figure out a good time to transfer from one building to the other.
“As soon as we have a final agreement approved, our focus is really going to be looking at when and how this move happens,” Franson said.
About 600 Madrona students will start school Wednesday at the former Alderwood Middle School. Construction is ongoing at the other site, and the district can’t place a temporary bus stop there, as previously reported. It wouldn’t be safe, Franson said.
Olympic View Water and Sewer District raised concerns about the school’s stormwater filtration system about two years ago. Officials were worried it would contaminate nearby Deer Creek, which provides 40 percent of the water district’s supply.
“We feel the agreement we reached provides an element of protection for the customers of Olympic View, and future water resources,” General Manager Lynne Danielson said.
