EVERETT — Upgrades are officially coming to Drew Nielsen Neighborhood Park following a unanimous City Council vote on Wednesday to put $345,000 toward playground renovations.
The city capital improvement dollars will go toward demolishing the existing playground, installing new equipment and expanding the play area. Final designs for the renovations are yet to be determined as planning is set to continue into the summer.
Two design options have been proposed for the park’s renovations, which would include new playground equipment, new benches and a chain link fence. The gazebo and arbor currently in the park will not be affected.
Construction could begin as early as fall 2025 and will take about 2 months to complete, the city’s golf and park program manager, Cory Rettenmier, previously said.
The city is also looking to partner with Providence Regional Medical Center Everett to construct a crosswalk improvement at the intersection of Colby Avenue and 13th Street, where the park is located. Funding for that improvement would come from the Everett’s public works fund, not its parks fund, the City Council executive assistant, Angela Ely, said Wednesday. Construction on those improvements could come in 2026.
Drew Nielsen Neighborhood Park is 18 years old, exceeding the city’s life cycle standard of 15 years.
