EVERETT — City crews spent five hours Sunday afternoon repairing a broken 12-inch water pipe.

The 1948 cast iron pipe broke at about 1 p.m. in the 800 block of Waverly Avenue.

Water service was turned off to about 29 properties in the surrounding area for a period of time, according to city spokeswoman Kate Reardon. As of Sunday night, water service had been restored.

The repair work caused some sediment in the piping system to become stirred up and some customers in the area may have experienced some discoloration of their tap water.

Reardon added that there are no health advisories and that the water is safe to drink.
