LAKE STEVENS — Kurt Hilt became the newest member of the Lake Stevens City Council on Tuesday, filling a position of a council member who died suddenly on May 26.
Lake Stevens Mayor Brett Gailey led the swearing-in process for Hilt who was appointed on June 24. He replaces Marcus Tageant, and will serve until the end of 2025.
Hilt, who worked as a firefighter and paramedic for South County Fire, served as a Lake Stevens City Council member from 2016 to 2020. In November 2019, Gailey defeated Hilt by 544 votes to become the city’s first full-time mayor. Hilt was also a board member of the Washington State Board of Health and the Snohomish Health District.
After a time of mourning, the council started reviewing applications for a new temporary City Council member. An election could not take place because the filing period had passed.
Hilt’s political experience qualified him for the appointment, said fellow council member Anji Jorstad.
“Mr. Hilt is uniquely qualified for the very unique scenario,” Jorstad said.
Hilt will be benefit the Lake Stevens City Council, Jorstad said.
“[He] understands the position we’re in now and the budget work we’ll need to do over the next several months,” she said.
His experience was a primary reason why he was selected, Jorstad said.
Council member Steve Ewing agreed.
”I’ve watched Kurt Hilt over many years. I attended numerous council meetings where he was present,” he said. “He’s well prepared, he’s thoughtful, he’s balanced.”
Hilt took a moment to acknowledge Tageant, saying he was “mindful” of why he was there. Later, he expressed his gratitude.
“I thank the Council for the appointment and your confidence,” Hilt said. “I’m here to work.”
