After three months of academic competition, the field of teams vying for this year’s Hi-Q championship has been narrowed to six.

Hi-Q is an academic competition sponsored by Everett Community College. Six teams will face off in the semifinals at 12:30 p.m. today at Everett Mall, 1402 SE Everett Mall Way.

The competition began with 20 teams from Snohomish and Island counties.

The Heather Clan Dance Troupe will perform at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Imagine Children’s Museum, 1502 Wall St., Everett.

The Bellingham-based troupe performs traditional Scottish highland and Irish step dances, as well as tap dances.

Many great buildings in the Everett area have come and gone over the years.

For example, the original Monte Cristo Hotel was replaced by what is now Providence Everett Medical Center’s Pacific Campus, said David Chrisman, chairman of Historic Everett.

At 2 p.m. today, historian and author Jack O’Donnell will discuss “Everett Architecture: Lost and Found” at the Everett Public Library auditorium, 2702 Hoyt Ave.

Admission is free.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars presents a memorial service at 1 p.m. today at the Alderwood Boys &Girls Club, 19714 24th Ave. W., Suite 10, Lynnwood.

The service will honor all veterans from VFW District 1, which includes nine posts in Snohomish and Island counties, and all members of the U.S. armed forces from Snohomish County who have been killed in action in Iraq.

The 2006 Legislature passed a law that allows for, but does not guarantee, a life term for clergy, coaches and teachers convicted of molesting or raping a child they knew. The law was characterized incorrectly in a story on Page A1 Thursday about a Republican group’s political phone campaign about a sex offender who lives in Lake Stevens.
