EVERETT — The Grand Avenue Park Bridge elevator could be down for at least a week after someone set off a fire extinguisher in the elevator last week, damaging the cables and brakes.
An exact date wasn’t available for when repairs will be done. The cost of parts and repairs for the elevator is expected to come in at around $5,500, city spokesperson Kathleen Baxter said in an email Thursday.
“We are hoping to have everything cleaned and back in service by next weekend, but that is not an exact timeline,” she said.
The city believes this was an act of vandalism.
There’s a ramp on the Grand Avenue Park side of the bridge, but the elevator and stairs are the only way to get down to the waterfront after crossing the bridge.
“At this time there is no other way for people with mobility issues to utilize the bridge and get to the waterfront,” Baxter said.
Completed in 2020, the bridge runs over the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe railway and West Marine View Drive. The $20 million bridge connects the Port of Everett and Grand Avenue Park near 16th Street.
The bridge also carries storm drainage and sewer pipes over the railroad and highway.
Less than a month after it opened in 2020, the elevator was out of service after someone damaged and vandalized the door. At the time, repairs cost between $1,200 and $1,500.
