MONROE — Want to earn college credit?
For people who live in east Snohomish County, there’s an option close to home.
Before signing up, keep a few things in mind: If you don’t like sermons, this college might not be for you. A team of pastors plan to do the teaching. Plus, the classes will be held in a church. Prospective students who aren’t comfortable with Christianity should look elsewhere.
The Rock Church in Monroe is now an extension campus of Portland Bible College. Pastors and other staff at the church will next week begin teaching six classes that will award between one and three credits each. A second semester, with seven new classes, is scheduled to begin in February.
The church has in the past offered certain courses to its interns and church members through a correspondence program with Portland Bible College, said Malinda Campbell, an assistant to Pastor Melinda Knight, who directs the program.
This is the first year the church is offering classes as a formal extension campus for the college, Campbell said.
The church began its internship program, known as The Quarry, in 1998. Designed for recent high school graduates, the program offers a choice of 10-month, one-year, two-year or three-year tracks. Fees for Quarry interns are included in the cost of the internship program. Others who wish to take classes at the extension campus will pay between $165 and $495 per course, plus $70 in application and registration fees.
About 1,200 people attend The Rock Church.
