EVERETT — The Kimberly-Clark Co. has agreed to spend $125,000 on projects to reduce wood smoke and pollution from diesel-burning vehicles in Everett as part of a settlement over a fine, the state Department of Ecology announced Wednesday.

The fine stems from a fire in a pile of wood waste in the Riverside neighborhood that the company allowed to smolder and smoke from July to December.

The wood waste was used to fuel the company’s pulp and paper mill on Everett’s waterfront.

The settlement agreement was negotiated down from an initial fine of $235,000. In addition to money on pollution-reduction projects, the company has agreed to pay the Department of Ecology $40,000 in fines.
