Some of the state’s public records treasures are now just a few clicks away. You can learn more on Thursday when Washington state archivist Jerry Handfield speaks at a gathering of the Stanwood Area Historical Society.

Handfield plans to talk about the hidden treasures of the state archives at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center, 27130 102nd Ave. NW.

Many of these records are being made accessible on the state archives’ website, www.digitalarchives.wa.gov.

The Washington State Archives contain public records from the towns, counties, cities and all the public agencies of the state. The records include births, marriages, deaths, governments, plats and surveys, military service, naturalization, census statistics, city ordinances, incorporation records and old photographs.

Handfield also plans to talk about the development of this effort, along with privacy and public record disclosure controversies and the costs and savings of digitizing archived treasures.
