SNOHOMISH — Prosecutors have charged the suspect in Sunday’s knife attack on two women near Maltby.
John Dimitri Kuljis, 31, was charged Thursday in Everett District Court with second-degree murder and first-degree assault, both with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors have until mid-March to re-file the charges in Snohomish County Superior Court.
Barbara Decker, 78, was killed. Her daughter Janine Shaffer, 62, suffered life-threatening injuries. Shaffer is expected to recover from her injuries.
Kuljis is being held on $1.5 million bail.
Sheriff’s detectives believe they recovered the weapon, which has been described as a carpet knife. It was found Wednesday along Highway 522. Kuljis and his uncle reportedly were at the home in unincorporated Snohomish to work on the bathroom. The uncle also was arrested after the weekend killing because he had unrelated warrants.
