GRANITE FALLS — A man died Saturday after he was discovered unresponsive in the water near the Granite Falls Fish Ladder, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
Shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to reports of a man, 46, unresponsive in the south fork of the Stillaguamish River near the 11600 block of Mountain Loop Highway, according to a sheriff’s office post on X. Paramedics attempted CPR, but pronounced the man dead at the scene.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the deceased and determine the cause and manner of death.
This is the second death at the fish ladder this year. On May 19, a 19-year-old Lake Stevens man was hiking at the fish ladder when he slipped and fell into the river.
Saturday’s death comes two days after a 24-year-old man died near Eagle Falls, the third drowning there this year.
As a heat wave remains in Snohomish County for the next few days, officials urge swimmers to follow these safety tips when entering the water:
• Always wear a life jacket when you are on the water. Never go near moving water without one.
• Beach logs, riverbanks and rocks near the shore are usually slippery. A fall can knock you unconscious and prevent you from being able to save yourself.
• Consider bringing a whistle. If you are in trouble, it could help alert people nearby.
