EVERETT — A high-ranking Snohomish County Public Works official responsible for water quality and flood-control work resigned earlier this month, citing a desire to focus on political and environmental goals.

Will Hall caught colleagues off guard when he announced his pending departure as surface water management director. Hall, who also serves as a Shoreline city councilman and the city’s current mayor, left the county job in early March.

“Stepping back from this full time job will allow me more time not only to engage in natural resource issues around the region but also to expand my activities and service as an elected official,” Hall wrote in a farewell email. “I hope I get a chance to work with many of you in a different capacity in the future.”

Gregg Farris has taken over as the county’s interim surface water director, a role he has fulfilled before.

County Executive Dave Somers hired Hall for the surface water job in early 2016. Before that, Hall worked for the County Council and in the county planning department.
