EVERETT — The guided-missile destroyer USS Shoup is expected to depart today on a deployment for six to nine months in the Western Pacific.

The crew of about 300 sailors will focus on maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts, which help establish conditions for regional stability, the Navy announced.

The Navy doesn’t disclose ahead of time the exact locations of where naval vessels travel while deployed.

The Shoup is part of the Nimitz Strike Group.

The aircraft carrier is sidelined with a mechanical problem to its propulsion system. Officials aboard the Nimitz said the carrier is set to deploy sometime this spring.

The problem was found while the Nimitz was performing pre-deployment maneuvers.
