EVERETT — An argument between neighbors south of Everett ended with a 60-year-old woman shot Sunday evening.
The suspect, a 19-year-old man, told Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies he was watching a movie when he heard a loud thud, like someone dropping a weight, according to court papers filed in Everett District Court.
“He said the loud thud was all he could take,” a deputy wrote. The suspect reported he grabbed and loaded his shotgun, went upstairs and pounded on his neighbor’s door.
No one answered. The man reported he was walking back down the stairs when he heard what he thought was a “raspy male voice,” according to court papers.
“Don’t ever do that again,” the voice shouted, according to the suspect’s account.
The suspect turned around. He allegedly pointed his shotgun at the neighbor, with the safety off, and started pulling the trigger.
Then, he told deputies, he realized the raspy voice didn’t belong to a man.
It belonged to a woman. A “grandma type.”
The suspect said he slightly pulled his shotgun down and to the right, according to court papers. But it was too late. He allegedly had already pulled the trigger.
The woman was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries. She was conscious and talking, sheriff’s spokesperson Courtney O’Keefe wrote. The woman’s condition Monday afternoon was unknown.
The man ran away, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies responded to the scene around 6 p.m. and soon arrested him.
The suspect was booked into Snohomish County Jail for investigation of first-degree assault.
