I was extremely concerned and disappointed to hear about the recent announcement of 12 layoffs from the Everett Herald’s newsroom. Sadly, in this day and age, our world is more polarized than ever and misinformation is spread and re-shared all too often. That is why access to comprehensive, unbiased and credible local news is more important than ever.
And while online news sources do help meet this need, it’s equally important to have a local source for printed news also available to our local residents. This lessens the impact of the digital divide and ensures news and information is accessible to the greater portion of our community. Local newspapers play a crucial role in building awareness of what’s occurring in our city and region by reporting on local events.
Larger publications simply do not cover local issues, news or government with the same depth and often are completely disconnected from the communities they’re covering when they do. Local news is important to overall community engagement, civic involvement and the preservation of our community’s history.
The Everett Herald has served this community for 123 years, nearly as long as Everett has been a city. It’s devastating to see support for local journalism and access to local news diminishing when it really should be growing. Our community needs and deserves reliable local news. It is my sincere hope that the Everett Herald is able to remain that news source for us, continuing for another 123 years and beyond.
