The column by Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne in a recent Herald, “Using the Bible to fully guide our priorities,” inspired me in church today.
Dionne quoted Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House, as telling Fox News “I am a Bible-believing Christian. … Go pick up a Bible off of your shelf and read it. This is my worldview. That is what I believe.” Our church’s gospel reading for today included, “everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 18:14.
Johnson may be a Bible-believing Christian, but his hero Donald Trump most certainly is not. Although humility is a common attribute of Christians it is a foreign word to Donald Trump. The legal trouble Donald Trump is in may be the beginning of his realization of the truth in this scripture, “everyone who exalts himself will be humbled.”
