Shift the school year to get around worst of covid

It’s time to change the school year. The covid pandemic has illuminated what we already knew about the pandemic: winter and the holidays are a dangerous time.

Why not change the school schedule to February through October? This could include two weeks of vacation during the summer. Perhaps around Memorial Day, Independence Day or Labor Day. The benefits:

1. Most importantly, we know that the spread of covid and the flu ease during this same period.

2. With nicer weather, this is safer time for traveling to and from school.

3. It’s a great time of year for many school sports, such as soccer. Daylight for kids to play with friends after school.

4. There will be three winter months out of school to enjoy the holidays, snow.

There are compromises to be made, but hopefully we can look at the upside while trying to make the safety of our senior citizens and others a priority.
