Society needs to open eyes, mind to help kids

In response to the Nov. 11 article, “Parents ask, what’s normal?”: What’s Normal? There is no “normal.” We are all unique. Society needs to open its eyes and mind to new concepts and research regarding a child’s development. Then it needs to open its heart to accept these differences in our “normal child.”

The information can be hard to find, but keep asking. There are sensory disorders changing the way a child can process and deliver ideas and actions. There is occupational therapy with sensory integration, vision therapy, special preschools, tutoring, seminars and books to try prior to the label ADHD and medication.

Try reading “The Out-of-Sync Child, How Does Your Engine Run?” or “A Mind at a Time.” Have your child thoroughly tested by the psychologist/counselor at school. Seek your own neurological testing.

Society wants an easy fix for a “busy” child. Dig deep to find out why the child seems busy. Take the challenge to get to know, understand and help your child completely before trying medications. You’ll find the rewards far more gratifying than monthly visits to the pharmacy.
