Regarding Tina Solium’s Sept. 14 letter to the editor (“Striking teachers should quit, find other work”), a cursory search of public and private costs for education resulted in the cost being very much the same, according to Private School Review and the National Center for Education Statistics. These were average costs which mean many would be higher and some lower.
In my 30 years as a junior high teacher, I met very few teachers who were not for their students. Those who weren’t soon left the profession. With today’s teacher shortage hiring new teachers would not be “easy.”
I have never met a teacher who entered the profession with the idea of becoming wealthy. They do enter it with the idea of making a positive difference.
As for teacher strikes: I know no teacher who not rather be in the classroom. You only need to ask them.
