When neighbors come together, wonderful things can happen.
Through its thrift stores, the St. Vincent de Paul North Sound Council supports low-income and homeless individuals across Snohomish County, with programs designed to meet basic needs, foster dignity, and build community.
“Everything we do comes back to helping our neighbors in need,” says Inga Paige, Executive Director and CEO.
Rooted in the values of justice and service established by its global namesake, the North Sound Council began serving Snohomish County in 1928 and formalized as a council office in 1969. Over decades, it has expanded its reach to provide assistance with utilities, clothing, prescription medication and more.
“We call them ‘neighbors in need,’” Paige explains, emphasizing the council’s person-centered approach.
Among its standout programs is the children’s bed program, which provides bedding, mattresses and frames to children who would otherwise sleep on the floor. Over the past decade, this initiative has grown in response to community needs. “Every child deserves a good night’s sleep,” Paige stresses, noting that volunteers visit families to assess needs and ensure support in the community.
Programs rooted in community
100 per cent of the thrift stores’ proceeds help fund its programs. “We don’t purchase items. Everything is donated by community members,” Paige says.
The stores also offer clothing and vouchers for homeless individuals.
They recently introduced a new pricing structure at the Everett and Monroe stores offering rotating discounts for more affordable shopping opportunities while increasing inventory turnover. Every week there are new items priced at .99 for the week!
“It’s one of the ways we try to balance sustainability with supporting our programs,” Paige explains.
Addressing modern challenges
Like many nonprofits, SVDP faces significant challenges, including declining donations. Despite these hurdles, the organization continues to innovate, recently partnering with ReSupply to offer donation pickups. “We rely on community support – whether through clothing, furniture, or financial contributions.”
“Seeing how many people are struggling motivates us every day,” Paige shares. “Community means lifting each other up – it’s about everyone doing their part to help.”
For those inspired to support their work, St. Vincent de Paul North Sound Council welcomes donations at their Everett and Monroe locations or online at svdpnsc.com. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram for more details.
