It’s been a long time since my rear end sat in a Nissan Maxima. Too long.

The 2019 Maxima Platinum is Nissan’s flagship sedan – and Platinum is the top-of-the-line trim level. And as I said many times before, you get what you pay for.

Maxima receives a mid-cycle refresh on the heels of the introduction of its all-new Altima. The combo creates a potent one-two punch for Nissan in the mid-size sedan segment, a niche that has been abandoned by some manufacturers.

It is offered in S, SV, SL, SR and Platinum trim levels, with the S available for less than $34,000.

Maxima cuts a captivating, performance-oriented exterior with 19-inch diamond-cut wheels, boomerang signature LED lighting that frames a larger V-motion grille, a new sport rear spoiler and integrated quad-tip exhaust finishers.

Mine was augmented with a Carnelian Red coat of enamel.

“As our flagship sedan, Maxima is an important contributor to the Nissan brand,” said Dan Mohnke, senior vice president, of Nissan’s U.S. Division. “Maxima is our longest running nameplate, having thrilled owners for four decades with style, performance and quality,” Mohnke continued.

Powered by a 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve, V6 engine with 300-horsepower output, it’s mated to a performance-oriented, Xtronic CVT automatic transmission. The combo generates 300 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 261 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm.

This new model includes Safety Shield 360 which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, high-beam assist, rear automatic braking and intelligent around-view monitor.

Platinum includes NissanConnect with navigation and services including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Ascot leather-appointed seats with diamond-quilted leather inserts.

In addition to all that, a Reserve Package was added as optional equipment ($1,140) and that brings to the table heated rear seats, the 19-inch wheels already mentioned and satin bronze faceted interior finishers.

No detail is spared. Maxima pampers five adults, and earns a respectable 30-miles-per-gallon, fuel-down-the-highway rating by the EPA.

The entertainment system features an11-speaker Bose audio system, which was created to deliver the ultimate premium audio experience. And the dual-panel, panoramic moon roof provides views of the sky for both front and rear passengers.

Convenience features befitting a luxury vehicle are part of the suite of available equipment – including a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel with an Easy Entry system, heated steering wheel, remote start via key fob and a power rear sunshade. But it’s not all about the look, safety and creature comforts. Maxima delivers tight handling, stable suspension, swift braking and a quiet cabin that makes conversation easy without shouting.
